Chapter Eighteen

The next night, I met Nate at the empty cabin again, but this time was different. It wasn’t a date, at least not the kind that would end up with us in bed together. We were going out of the fence.

I waited on the side of the cabin, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw Nate approaching. Visions of being with him inside the cabin flashed through my mind.

“Was it hard to get the keys again?” I asked when he came up next to me.

“Not at all. But James said I’m going to have to share, that other people want to get in there too.”

“Other people? Or him and Juliette?”

Nate shook his head. “I didn’t ask. Ready?”

“Yes,” I said looking around him for the wire cutters. “How are we getting through?”

“It’s already done,” he said as he looked around the area to make sure there wasn’t anyone around. Everyone was likely already inside their cabins for the night.

He grabbed my hand and led me towards the back fence. I couldn’t tell where it had been cut until he peeled it back.

We both crawled through and ran into the jungle behind the camp. When we were surrounded by trees and out of sight, Nate grabbed my hand.

“It’s so dark. How do you see where you’re going?” he asked just before tripping on a long squiggly branch that stuck up out of the sand.

“I’m just careful,” I said, and I could practically hear his eyes rolling. “Your eyes will adjust.”

“OK, so which way to the mysterious cabin with a phone?”

I looked around, but since we’d entered the jungle area in a different location, I wasn’t exactly sure. “Um, this way, I think.”

“You think?”

“Yeah, I didn’t go this way last time.”

As we walked, the trees and foliage got thicker. This part of the jungle was darker because of how dense it was. We couldn’t see very far since the trees overhead blocked out too much of the moonlight.

I was pretty sure we were going the wrong way. Nothing looked familiar. I remembered seeing a mountain, but this time I couldn’t see anything except for the leaves and shadows in front of us.

My grip on Nate’s hand tightened when I heard a strange guttural noise. He turned and looked at me, his eyes reflecting light in the darkness.

“What was that?” he asked, his voice barely audible.

“I’m not sure,” I responded, slowing my steps.

A bright, glowing ball of orange bounced through the trees somewhere ahead of us. The light disappeared after a few seconds. I swallowed hard when I heard the same odd hooting noises I’d heard the other night.

When two more orange glowing orbs moved by, I was pretty sure it was Luke and his group. Since they’d kept moving, I was also quite sure they didn’t know Nate and I were there. If they had, Luke would have been in my face, threatening to bring me back to camp at once.

“Torches. Let’s go,” I said pulling Nate reluctantly along.

“What are we doing, Holly?” he asked quickly.
